Safety Beats Speed

The physics, and ethics, of going too fast on a smooth floor.

Seals slide. This is not in dispute. Our mandate is to ensure they slide where it is posted, at velocities the station can forgive. We study friction, confidence, and the precise moment a hallway becomes a temptation.

Sub-Offices

Friction Standards Lab

Determines how slippery is too slippery. Maintains the official Slide Index. Wears appropriate footwear.

Ramp Compliance Unit

Locates and removes ramps that "appeared overnight." Files them under Engineering & Inventions with a sigh.

Velocity Risk Assessment

Calculates the consequences of enthusiasm. Most outcomes: fine. Some outcomes: Hallway 3.

Seal Confidence Monitoring

Tracks the gap between "I can make that turn" and the turn itself. The gap is the whole field.

Posted Slide Zones

Designs the sanctioned areas where sliding is not only allowed but encouraged. Padded. Cheered.

Incident Re-enactment

Carefully reconstructs notable slides for the record. Strictly educational. Occasionally thrilling.

Standing Procedures

  • Walk when possible. Slide only where posted.
  • A confident seal is a station asset. A confident seal in Hallway 3 is a report.
  • Ramps require a permit. Permits require a plan. Plans require a deep breath.
  • Hallway 3 is currently stable. This is not an invitation.
